Midterms are this week for Valdosta State University so we thought we’d share some interesting facts about the impact of quality sleep on brain function!

One Third Of Our Lives Are Spent Asleep

Years of our life spent asleep! Sleep is a very important part of human life and vital to our health to treat it properly.

Our Body & Mind Are Busy At Night

Even though we are asleep, that does not mean our body isn’t doing anything. In fact, our entire system is active while we sleep, just in a different way than during our waking hours. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information “Several studies indicated that sleep disturbances and sleep loss impairs learning and school performance.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3768102/

Make the most of your school work during the day by sleeping well to lock it in your memory.

Keeping A Schedule

When you sleep your body adapts to certain rhythms. Have you ever noticed you tend to wake up at the same time of day regardless of whether or not you set an alarm? That is your circadian rhythm directing your body of what to do. Imagine what impact it has on your system to have consistently interrupted sleep due to an uncomfortable mattress. Try to get up and go to bed around the same time every day to avoid disruption of your circadian rhythm.

Exposure To Light

Your sleep needs are also directed by light exposure. Sleep-wake homeostatis is responsible for reminding the body of its need for sleep. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes “Specialized cells in the retinas of your eyes process light and tell the brain whether it is day or night and can advance or delay our sleep-wake cycle”. https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-Caregiver-Education/Understanding-Sleep. Get an eye mask to block light or use light blocking curtains in your dorm room or apartment.
